* Finance adviser says federal budget for fiscal year 2009-10 will be presented on 13th
KARACHI: The government has decided to abolish subsidies to the gas, electricity and oil sectors, Finance Adviser Shaukat Tareen said on Sunday.
Talking to reporters after attending a conference at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), he said federal budget for the fiscal year 2009-10 would be presented on June 13.
The finance adviser said the focus for the next year would be on reviving the economy and creating employment opportunities. He said that would be achieved through working on the productive side of the economy, that is the agriculture and manufacturing sectors, overcoming energy shortages and infrastructure deficiencies.
Tareen said the assistance extended by the Friends of Pakistan forum would also be utilised in this regard.
He said attention would be paid to revenue generation, adding that the existing tax measures would not be increased, but efforts would be made to expand the tax net. This would be carried out administratively as well as on policy basis, he said.
Tareen said the budget would directly extend assistance to the poor and enhance the subsidies provided to them, apart from increasing allocation for the health and education sectors. app
